At the beginning of 1928 Szymanowski wrote a short work for voice and piano, Vocalise-Etude. It was a commission from A. L. Hettich, who was publishing in Paris (Leduc) a collection of vocal studies. He paid the composer 500 francs for this composition. The work in its course makes use of different scales, mainly diatonic, but also Arabic-Persian, whole-tone and pentatonic ones.
